Missing Pet? There’s An App For That

June 30, 2011 in Apps, News, Products, UK by Jonathan (Vetsforum Editor)

Mucky Pups is an iPhone app that has been launched to coincide with Microchipping Month. Mucky Pup will alert all local app users and send images, key information and last known locations to all other app users when a pet is reported missing. The app will also alert owners as to when their pet needs to be checked up, wormed and treated based on a preset scheduling system.

Mucky Pup can be downloaded here. There is a small charge for the service.

The following is a release from the Kennel Club:

June has seen thousands of pet owners take action to protect their pets during the eighth annual National Microchipping Month, but it doesn’t stop here, as a new mobile app aimed to inform and empower pet owners launches.

Hampshire vet and author, Chris Queen MRCVS has been working in conjunction with software developer Sean Fane of UK App Centre to develop the apps, Mucky Pup and Purrfect Paws for dog and cat owners with an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Launched with the help of Petlog, the UK’s largest microchip database, the apps are free to download throughout National Microchipping Month this June.

The idea came together when Sean took his new puppy Bailey to vet Chris for his first injections. Talking, they realised there was a lack of communication with new pet owners about the important steps a responsible pet owner should take, such as when to take the puppy for its first injections, information about microchipping and when and how to socialise them, as well as countless other pieces of information.

The apps provide an all-in-one management tool for owners to care for the health and wellbeing of their beloved pets. One of the key features, a ‘Lost Pet’ button, promises to help pet owners when their pets go missing by spreading the word with a ‘lost’ alert to other app users within a defined geographical radius. An automatic email complete with an image of the pet and key information such as their microchip number and the owner’s contact details is sent to local key contacts, such as veterinary clinics and the app can create a lost pet poster which recipients can easily print out and display.

Sean says: “We strongly believe that this system will help to greatly increase the chances that a missing pet will be found, identified and ultimately reunited with their owner quickly.”

Launched as a free download with Petlog during National Microchipping Month, Mucky Pup, which is currently available on iTunes, and Purrfect Paws, which is due for imminent release, are a one-stop-shop for pet owners to actively organise, manage, access and share certain information with key contacts and friends. From entering vaccination details and automatically receiving reminders, to finding, storing and contacting a pet’s key contacts, such as the local vet.

Chris explains: “We wanted to create a tool that made managing your pet’s key information, such as when they were wormed and with what, or when their rabies booster for their pet passport is due, making sure owners have the information and ability to access key information about their pets when it counts the most.

“Mucky Pup and Purrfect Paws are powerful and intuitive applications which are already changing the way people manage their pets.”
