BARCELONA, October 6, 2011 – This fifth edition of the Southern European Veterinary Conference (SEVC)–the cooperative venture between the Spanish veterinary association, AVEPA, and the North American Veterinary Conference, NAVC—successfully fulfilled expectations. SEVC 2011 , attracted a total attendance of more than 3.000 veterinarians registered in the scientific programme, as well as 260 participants at the workshops, 300 participants at the Precongress symposiums organized by Hill’s and the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM)
The international registrations totaled 1,012, representing 51 different countries, with the majority of attendees coming from UK, Portugal, France, Benelux and the Nordic Countries. Also participants from far away countries such as India, Bahrain, Australia, Canada and Hong Kong were present at this year’s SEVC. A significant number of representatives from Russia joined this year the event, boasting 60 veterinarians. This international representation distinguishes SEVC as the largest international small animal veterinary conference in the world in terms of percentage of international delegates
Dedicated to their mission of providing the European companion animal veterinary community the highest level of performance, more than 100 international experts presented 200 lectures. This year, in addition to English and Spanish, simultaneous translations were offered at several lectures in Portuguese, Polish and Russian.
Attendance was outstanding for the two symposia organised by two of the main sponsors:
The Virbac symposium presented a novel vaccine against Leishmaniasis supported by 6 hours of lectures and dialogue which were attended by almost 300 veterinarians. The Elanco symposium brought together another large group of attendees to unfold new scientific techniques and marketing strategies regarding flea’s control.
Keeping in line with the vision of organizing state-of-the-art, innovative, hands-on, continuing education programs, 14 workshops were offered to attendees to bring clinical experience to the education experience. All seats were sold out for this program, showing the huge success of these sessions.
In addition to the scientific program, the SEVC offers the attractions of Barcelona history, beauty, and fine weather as well as Spanish-style entertainment and an outstanding exhibit hall that this year featured 106 companies, including representatives from France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom as well as Spain. New Symposia Extend Learning Experience at the 2011 SEVC
Symposia on flea control and leishmaniosis are being offered to extend the learning experience at this year’s Southern European Veterinary Conference (SEVC), which takes place from Thursday 29 September to Sunday 2 October 2011 in Barcelona. The event already features the most comprehensive scientific programme available in Europe, including a unique range of practical workshops and wet labs.
The symposia are being organised by two of the SEVC’s major sponsors – Elanco Companion Animal Health and Virbac Animal Health. Affinity Pet care, Hill’s Nutrition, Merial and Nestle Purina have also signed up as main sponsors, the highest level of industry support the SEVC has received and confirmation, say the organisers, of its growing importance in the global CPD calendar.
Virbac is hosting a symposium called ‘Advanced Prevention against Leishmaniosis’ on Friday 30 September. Leading speakers from academia and Virbac will cover the latest developments on the management of this challenging disease, including the first registered vaccine against leishmaniosis in Europe, CaniLeash®.
Elanco Companion Animal Health, which recently launched Comfortis®, an oral flea treatment for dogs, is hosting its symposium on Saturday 1 October. Leading dermatologists and parasitologists including Dr. Chiara Noli from Italy, Dr. Craig Griffin from the USA, Professor Lluis Ferrer and Dr. Guadalupe Miro from Spain will discuss how vets can improve owner compliance with preventive health regimes. Dr. Ernest Ward from the USA will explain the potential value of flea control to vets in practice.
A one day symposium held by the International Society of Feline Medicine, sponsored by Nestle, will also run during Thursday 29 September.
The SEVC aims to present the latest advances in animal care to the veterinary community from Europe and beyond in a professional but relaxed environment. Organised jointly between the Spanish veterinary association AVEPA and the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC), it offers the largest scientific programme outside the USA, as well as workshops and wet labs, which are unique outside the USA. A major trade exhibition runs alongside the event with over 100 international companies.
Commenting on industry support for the 2011 event, Joaquin Aragones, Vet Med and Executive Director of the event, said: “The heavy weight support we’ve received from the veterinary pharmaceutical industry is great news for delegates who will have the opportunity to benefit from the additional symposia run by sponsors and to learn first-hand about some exciting new product being launched this year.
We’re very grateful for the commitment and generosity shown by our sponsors and believe their support reflects the growing reputation of the SEVC as a milestone event. We’ll be working closely with them to ensure this year’s conference and exhibition are most successful yet – both for the thousands of veterinary delegates and for our exhibitors.”
All lectures at SEVC are provided in English and Spanish with simultaneous translation. Some rooms will also offer translation into Portuguese, Italian, Polish and Russian.

Practical learning and practice management take centre stage at 2011 SEVC
An increased focus on wet lab practical learning and on strategies for effective practice management will help ensure that this year’s Southern European Veterinary Conference (SEVC) builds on the huge success of the 2010 event, which was attended by a record 4,700 veterinary delegates from 47 countries, say the organisers. Now entering its fifth year, the 2011 SEVC will take place from Thursday 29 September to Sunday 2 October 2011 in Barcelona.
With its workshops and wet labs consistently one of its most popular features, the SEVC’s organisers have increased the range of subject areas to be covered at this year’s conference and, once again, recruited many leading global names to deliver them, including cardiologist Professor John Bonagura and cytologist Professor Guillermo Couto. Both teach at Ohio State University and are widely published in their fields.
Mr Mark Opperman, founder and president of VMC Inc, a US-based veterinary practice management firm, has also been unveiled as a keynote speaker in the two and a half day practice management programme. A globally respected author and speaker, Mark Opperman will cover topics including emerging trends in the effective management of veterinary practices, client fee setting and team motivation and delegation. A major trade exhibition runs alongside the event.
Commenting on plans for the SEVC 2011, Joaquin Aragones, Vet Med and Executive Director of the event, said: “Each year we set the bar higher in terms of the quality and quantity of learning opportunities available at the SEVC. This year we’re offering more than 200 lectures delivered by 100 experts – many of whom are renowned at a global level. They will share their knowledge and experience with delegates through the extensive Scientific Programme, in a range of pre-conference symposia and in our workshops.
These practical sessions always prove attractive to delegates as they provide a rare opportunity to enhance their practice skills and learn new techniques in a hands-on environment. As they were so popular last year, we’ve added four more to this year’s conference.
The veterinary profession is facing major changes, driven partly by the economic climate in many countries and the demands of increasingly well informed and selective clients. There are major opportunities out there for those for those in the profession who are prepared to embrace these changes in a positive way and to invest in improving both their clinical and practice management skills. This year’s SEVC will help delegates stay one step ahead in a fast-changing veterinary world, providing a unique opportunity to learn new approaches and discuss the latest thinking in key areas with thought leaders and peers from around the world.”
All lectures at SEVC are provided in English and Spanish with simultaneous translation. Some rooms will also offer translation into Italian, Polish and Russian.
